FOR DISASTER MEDICINE
"ZASCHITA"

"Disaster Medicine", established in 1992, dwells on the most important matters relevant to theoretical and practical aspects of disaster medicine.
It is the official journal of the All-Russian Centre for Disaster Medicine "Zaschita " and is published quarterly. The journal is intended not only for medical professionals but also for disaster managers, scientists and planners whose activity in one way or another is connected with the realization of problems of disaster medicine such as organization and tactics of disaster medicine service medical evacuation clinical aspects of disaster medicine sanitation measures in emergencies epidemiology research methodology, experimental investigation, discussion, reviews education and training medical equipment for emergency situations training of the lay public and personnel of different non-medical facilities for emergency situations prevention and population protection in emergency
The journal regularly publishes approved official documents on disaster medicine. To date 18 issues of "Disaster Medicine" have been published, including 5 special-topic issues devoted to: decermary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident; medical and sanitation response in earthquake, radiation and chemical accidents; organization and management of sanitation and epidemiology measures in different emergencies; organization, clinical and psychophysiological problems of disaster psychiatry.

Key specialists and managers of public health from Russia and abroad contribute papers to the journal. Articles from Latvia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Germany, Czech Republic (Mountain Medicine Society) and Canada (International Association "Extreme Environment and Disaster Medicine") have been published. Since 1997 the editorial office has been publishing Supplements to the journal devoted to separate urgent problems of disaster medicine (in accord with the approved instruction manuals) for the specialists of regional health services. Currently there are five Supplements (physicians' manuals):

  1. Medical care for the victims of tear-gas aerosol eye injury
  2. Pain syndrome therapy during the stages of medical care delivery
  3. Sanitation measures on the site of chemical accident with environmental ammonia release
  4. Conduction anaesthesia during the various stages of medical care delivery; the injured population and infectious patients in emergency

In the second half of 1997 the following Supplements are planned:

  1. Municipal hospital response in emergency
  2. Organizational and clinical aspects of medical care delivery to children with crush syndrome
  3. Standards of psychiatric care to victims in emergencies
  4. Assessment of the dynamic state of the occupational reliability and professional health of organized contingents
  5. Training of the personnel of the State Regional Sanitary and epidemic Surveillance Centre and regional centre for disaster medicine (ARCDM "Zaschita") in radiation accident response activities

Articles in Russian have abstracts in English.
