THE WORLD CONGRESS ON HEALTH TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS
will be held from 26th to 29th August 1990
in Dublin, Ireland

The Electro-Technical Council of Ireland in conjunction with The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) are organizing the World Congress on Health Technology Standards.
The purpose of the Congress is to bring together the developers and manufacturers of equipment and devices used in medicine, the users of such equipment and experts in the field of standards.
It is intended that a comprehensive review of "State of the Art" Technology will lead to a definition of present and future needs for standards. An update on risk management and the application of the latest developments in this field to the quality and safety of medical equipment will be included. The aspect of safety requirements versus performance will have to be discussed in order to indicate the content of future standards in the light of developing technology.
The Congress will discuss a wide spectrum of medical equipment and devices in a unique way to produce a solid foundation for the development of safer therapeutic and diagnostic technology for the coming decades.
Research, manufacture, installation and application of equipment used in health care, including medicine, surgery and dentistry will be highlighted as well as the areas of sterile single use products and devices used in specialist areas such as ophthalmic and dental. Developments in the fields of in vitro diagnostic and laboratory devices will also be covered.
Innovation, technology transfer and international cooperation in the Regional/European approach to the harmonization of legislation and standards, together with economic aspects and public procurement in the medical field will also be reviewed.

G. WHITAKER INTERNATIONAL BURNS PRIZE PALERMO (ITALY) UNDER THE PATRONAGE

  • OF THE AUTHORITIES
  • OF THE SICILIAN REGION FOR 1991

By law n. 57 of June 14th 1983 the Sicilian Regional Assembly authorized the President of the Region to grant the "Giuseppe Whitaker Foundation", a non-profit-making organization under the patronage of the Accademia del Lincei, with seat in Palermo, an annual contribution for the establishment of a "G. Whitaker International Burns Prize" aimed at recognizing the activity of the most qualified experts from all countries in the field of burns pathology and treatment.
The amount of the prize is fixed at twenty million Italian lire.
The prize will be awarded every year by the month of June at the Palermo seat of the G. Whitaker Foundation.
The adjudicating committee is composed of the President of the Foundation, the President of the Sicilian Region, the Representative of the Accademia dei Lincei within the Foundation, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Palermo University, the President of the Italian Society of Plastic Surgery, and a legal expert in the burns field nominated in agreement with the President of the Region as a guarantee of the respect for the scientific purpose which the legislators intended to achieve when establishing the prize.

AWARD OF THE G. WHITAKER INTERNATIONAL BURNS PRIZE
PALERMO, ITALY FOR 1990

In the course of a meeting held on March 3rd 1990 at the seat of the G. Whitaker Foundation, Palermo, after examining the scientific activity in the field of research, teaching, clinical organization, prevention and cooperation among the nations, presented by various candidates, in the light of the consideration guiding the analysis of the high level of the candidates, the Adjdicating Committee unanimously decided to award the prize for 1990 to:
Prof.' Simone Teich-Alasia, Professor Emeritus of Plastic Surgery and Burns Therapy, Turin Traurnatologic Center, Italy.
The prize is awarded for this motivation:
For having indicated as long ago as the 1960s a rational method of assistance for the severely burned patient, creating the first burns centre in Italy with modern architectural and functional criteria.
He has dedicated himself to the study of numerous clinical and surgical aspects of the burn disease, publishing his acute observations in many papers and texts.
His commitment to the campaign for the prevention of fire accidents in the industrial sector has given a concrete contribution to the creation of an awareness of the problem of safety at work.
To crown his activity he has founded and now presides over the Italian Burns Study and Research Centre and the Piedmontese Foundation for Burns Research.

THE 8th INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON BURN INJURIES OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR BURN INJURIES
will be held from 11th to 16th November 1990
in NEW DELHI, INDIA

The scientific programme of the Congress will consist of plenary lectures, symposia and free papers highlighting the recent advances in Burns care and treatment with special relevance to the needs of third world countries.
