Burn Treatment

The Third Congress on Burn Treatment
with International , Participation was held in Kosice (Czechoslovakia) on 13th and 14th
June 1991 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the constitution of the Kosice Burn
Centre, under the patronage of the Czechoslovak Medical Association "J.E.
Purkinijeand the Czechoslovak Society of Plastic Surgery, Section on Burns.
The Congress was organized by Jaroslav Blaha M.D.B.S., Director of the Centre for Burn
Treatment and Reconstructive Surgery in Kosice, who was the President of the Congress, and
by Jan Babik M.D.B.S., Assistant Surgeon at the same Centre, who was the Secretary
General.
Stefen Sinko, an illustrious name in Czechoslovak Burn Care and the creator of the Kosice
Burn Center, was the Honorary President.
The MBC was officially invited and the Club has represented by its Secretary General M.
Masellis.
The proceedings filled two days of intense scientific activity covering nearly all the
sectors of burns pathology.
The opening session was dedicated to the management of fire disasters. Papers were read
by:
- M. Masellis (MBC) on "Fire Disaster:
Definition, evaluation of disaster and emergency aid";
- M.D. Mohr (Koblenz) on "Triage of Mass Burn
Injuries";
- W. Sologub (Moscow) on "Organization of I
Disaster Burn Freatment";
- B. Sisulak (Bratislavia) on "Civil Defence
Disaster Reliet7',
- J. Latal (Bratislavia) on "Prognosis of Mass
Injuries";
- L. Broz (Prague) on "Resuscitation and
prognosis of burn injuries";
- J. Babik on "Prognosis in mass Burn
Injuries".
The papers dealt most exhaustively and
precisely with fire disasters and burn disasters, and confirmed once again the
ever-growing interest of burns specialist in these events. The session was followed by an
interesting Round Table discussion by the various speakers, with the lively participation
of the public.
At the close of the First Day's proceedings the Fire Brigade and EMT Brigade displayed
their efficiency, using aircraft and land vehicles, in an emergency relief operation
during an exercise for the extinguishing of a vast fire.
The second day's proceedings were devoted to the treatment of various other problems.
A. Brcic JJubliana) and L. Menesi (Budapest) in papers respectively entitled
"Rehabilitation of the Burned Hand" and "About the surgical rehabilitation
of the burned hand", described the state of the art in the field of hand
rehabilitation.
R. Konigova (Prague) and M. Giupta (Jaipur) spoke about
"Neuropsyqhi*cal stress in Burn Teams" and "High Tension Electric
Injuries".
E. W. Sawer (Kroningen) gave an interesting lecture on "Selective intestinal
decontamination for prevention of wound colonisation in severely burned patients" and
F Longaner (Kosice) incisively described "Morphology of the human respiratory
tract damaged by burns".
Paediatric burns were considered by M. Giupta (Jaipur) in "Paediatric burns
epidemiology" and K. Svoboda (Prague) in "European children burn camp in
Belgium", an interesting report on the activity of functional and psychological
recovery in a holiday camp for children presenting pathologies secondary to burns. In the
field of therapy, very detailed papers were read by D. Eicknoff (Koblenz) on
"Experience with Keratinocyte transplantation in burns", L. Klein (Hradec
Kralove) on "Clinical experience with xenografts in burned patients", and A.
Suchardova (Prague) on "The use of Bactigras in burn treatment in Moravia
Region".
The proceedings concluded with a paper by P. Brychta (Brno) on "History and
presence of burn treatment in Moravia Region". Thanks to the scientific content of
the papers presented and the excellent organization, the Congress reached a very high
level of success.
