The European Centre for Disaster Medicine (CEMEC), situated in San Marino, was established in 1986 under the aegis of the Council of Europe. The aim of CEMEC is to promote the prevention and the mitigation of the effects of natural and technological disasters through research, training programmes and international collaboration, in particular among the countries of Europe. In cooperation with the Council of Europe, the World Health Organization, the Office of the United Nations Disaster Relief Coordinator, the Mediterranean Burns Club, universities and other specialized bodies, CEMEC thus brings its humanitarian and scientific contribution to the efforts against the suffering and destruction caused by disasters.
