The Management of Mass Burn Casualties and Fire Disasters

by M. Masellis, Division of Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre, Civic Hospital Italy and S. W. A. Gunn, President of MBC. Published December 1992, Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, London, Boston. The health professions are continually developing effective techniques of burns and mass casualty management. In parallel, fire prevention and fire fighting techniques had developed considerably in most communities. It is therefore surprising that, while aiming at the same objective, the two sectors have rarely come together. The Mediterranean Burns Council is a professional organization that initiated the first international gathering of specialist in burns as a surgical, clinical problem, and of counterparts dealing with fires as a social, disaster management problem. This novel approach and symbiosis has proved timely and successful. This, the resulting book, reflects the commitment of all concerned to the reduction of fire disasters and the improvement of burns therapy.

The Management of Mass Burns and Fire Disasters - Perspectives 2000

by M. Masellis, and S. W. A. Gunn. Published 1995, Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, London, Boston. This is a sequel to The Management of Mass Burn Casualties and Fire Disasters, compiled by the same editors. The health professions have been continually developing effective management in burn therapy; in parallel, the community has been mobilizing fire prevention and fire fighting mechanisms that protect the environment from ever-increasing hazards of disasters. It was therefore timely that, aiming at the same objective, the two sectors were brought together successfully in that volume, now strengthened by this book. Acknowledged by authorities as a breakthrough, the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons pronounced it highly desirable as part of the worldwide effort to promote trauma care, while the Canadian Medical Association Journal called it a 'block-buster book that should be in every medical library in the country'. Like its predecessor, this book is a continuing reflection of MBC's commitment to the reduction of fire disasters and the improvement of burn therapyin the 21st Century.
